Things to Do in Brighton When It Rains

Palaces, aquariums, the oldest cinema in the UK and a comedy club: how to spend a soggy Brighton day without getting soggy.

When it rains in Brighton, and it does, sideways, the best things to do are indoors and close together: the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Museum and its new Magic Place installation, SEA LIFE Brighton on the seafront, a film at the Duke of York's, the free Hove Museum of Creativity, and a comedy night at Komedia. Add a rummage through Snoopers Paradise and a backstage tour at the Theatre Royal and you can lose a whole wet weekend without once getting properly soaked. Hours and prices were checked in October 2026.

The Royal Pavilion

The obvious answer, and the right one. You could spend a dry two hours in the Royal Pavilion just looking up at the ceilings. From October to March it is open 10am to 5.15pm, last entry 4.30pm. Adults pay £21.50, children (5 to 18) £13, and Brighton and Hove residents £16.50 including up to four children. The DRAGONS trail runs inside until 1 November 2026, free with admission, and there is an official tour every Saturday at 2pm. Book online with Brighton & Hove Museums for 5% off.

Brighton Museum and Magic Place

Thirty seconds across the garden from the Pavilion, which is handy when the heavens open. Brighton Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm (closed Mondays unless it is a bank holiday). From 24 October 2026 to 21 February 2027 it hosts Magic Place, an interactive installation that responds to you as you move through it, and it is included in the normal ticket: £10.50 for adults, £5 for children, £8 for residents with up to four kids. A combined Pavilion and museum morning is the classic Brighton rainy day for a reason.

SEA LIFE Brighton

On the seafront, SEA LIFE Brighton opened in 1872, was designed by Eugenius Birch (the same man behind the West Pier) and calls itself the world's oldest continually operating aquarium. Standard tickets start at £16 per adult and are cheaper booked ahead. The Victorian building is half the appeal. Go first thing on a wet Saturday before every family in Sussex has the same idea.

A film at the Duke of York's

The Duke of York's Picturehouse on Preston Road opened on 22 September 1910, and Picturehouse says it is the UK's oldest purpose-built cinema as verified by the Cinema Theatres Association. Book a seat, buy a drink, listen to the rain on the roof. Its younger sister, Duke's at Komedia, is in North Laine if you are already in town. In early November the city's film festival, CINECITY, runs from 6 to 15 November 2026, which is perfect timing for wet weather.

Hove Museum of Creativity

Free, warm, and rarely rammed. Hove Museum at 19 New Church Road opens Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm, with Cafe Rust inside serving until 4.30pm. Over half term there is a hands-on family photography day on 24 October and a Black History Month craft session on 30 October. It is a short bus ride west of the centre.

Komedia

When the afternoon turns into evening and it is still pouring, Komedia on Gardner Street runs its Komedia Comedy Club on Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, doors at 7pm. Until 25 October it is also teaming up with Brighton Dome for the Brighton Dome Comedy Festival, with shows across both venues. Book ahead on weekends.

Theatre Royal Brighton

The Theatre Royal has been entertaining the city for more than 218 years and is Grade II* listed. From 24 October 2026 to 27 March 2027 it runs backstage tours, which are a lovely nosy way to spend a wet morning, and the main stage has touring shows most weeks: Horrible Histories plays from 29 to 31 October and Six arrives from 1 to 5 December.

Snoopers Paradise and North Laine

Ninety stalls under one roof at 7 to 8 Kensington Gardens means Snoopers Paradise is basically a rain shelter with vintage clothes, records and oddities. Further along Kensington Gardens at number 27 to 28 is Resident, open until 6pm Monday to Saturday and 5.30pm on Sunday. Dart between the two and the rest of North Laine's cafes and you will barely notice the weather.

What not to do in the rain

  • The i360: lovely on a clear day, a very expensive view of cloud on a grey one.
  • The Booth Museum on Dyke Road: it has been closed to the public since 20 April 2025 for improvements, with only occasional drop-in days.
  • Volk's Electric Railway: closed for the winter until next season.
  • The Undercliff Walk: waves come over the wall in rough weather.

The good news: almost everything above is within fifteen minutes' walk of the Pavilion, so a decent umbrella and one dash between doors is all you need.
