The Best Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Brighton
Brighton's best restaurant is vegetarian, its best plant-based food is in a pub and its best takeaway is vegan. Here is where to eat.
By Only Brighton EditorialThe best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Brighton are terre à terre on East Street, the vegetarian restaurant locals voted the city's best overall in 2026; Earth and Stars, a fully plant-based pub in North Laine; Bonsai Plant Kitchen on Baker Street, cooking over a Japanese charcoal grill; Food for Friends, vegetarian since 1981; and Purezza in Kemptown, the vegan pizzeria that opened in 2015. Add Moksha for brunch, Indian Summer for spice and Oowee Vegan for a dirty burger, and you will never once miss meat. Everything below was checked in October 2026. Brighton has long been one of the easiest places in Britain to eat plants, and the competition keeps everyone sharp.
terre à terre, East Street
terre à terre, at 71 East Street in the Lanes, has been cooking vegetarian and vegan food since 1993 and was voted Best Brighton and Hove Restaurant at the 2026 BRAVO awards, while also coming third for plant-based food. It is playful, generous cooking with organic, natural and English wines. On Sundays there is a set sharing menu at £35 for two courses or £45 for three, and the Terre à Verre deal, a tapas-style plate with chunky chips and a 500ml carafe of wine for £35.95 a head, runs Wednesday to Friday lunchtimes and all day Sunday. Prices are from its menus page.
Earth and Stars, Windsor Street
Earth and Stars, at 46 Windsor Street, is one of North Laine's most historic pubs and won the 2026 BRAVO Plant Champions award for the best plant-based food in the city. The whole menu is plant-based, and the Sunday roast, with a plant-based pork belly and rice paper crackling, is the thing to book for. The pub has a rooftop solar panel and a small roof garden too.
Bonsai Plant Kitchen, Baker Street
Bonsai Plant Kitchen, at 44 to 45 Baker Street (BN1 4JN), just off London Road, came second for plant-based food and fifth for best restaurant overall in 2026. It is a Tokyo-inspired neighbourhood restaurant cooking over a bincho grill with premium Japanese charcoal, and the BRAVO organisers describe it as the city's only fully plant-based, nut-free restaurant. It opens for dinner every day, with lunch on Friday and Saturday, and does a £15 bento box and a tasting menu. The cocktails placed sixth in the city too.
Food for Friends, Prince Albert Street
Food for Friends, at 17 to 18 Prince Albert Street in the Lanes, has been a vegetarian restaurant since 1981 and welcomes vegans. It opens from 10am every day, with brunch, a Sunday roast and a kids' menu, and it has a whole menu cooked without onion or garlic, which is rare and very welcome if you have that allergy. It came 13th in the 2026 plant-based vote.
Purezza, St James's Street
Purezza opened its first restaurant in Brighton in 2015 with one aim: to make the best vegan pizza. You will find it at 12 St James's Street in Kemptown (BN2 1RE), open for dinner most nights, from noon at weekends and closed on Tuesday. As well as pizza there is pasta, salad and dessert, with gluten-free options. See Purezza's Brighton page for times.
Moksha, York Place
Moksha, at 4 to 5 York Place, is not a vegetarian cafe, but it came fourth in the plant-based vote because the meat-free versions of its brunch plates are as good as the originals. It is walk-in only, from 8am daily.
Indian Summer
Indian Summer celebrates 25 years in 2026. It is a modern Indian restaurant with sharing plates from across the regions, street art on the walls and reggae on the stereo, and it placed eighth for plant-based food, third for international cuisine and sixth for best restaurant in this year's BRAVOs.
Takeaways and quick bites
Oowee Vegan won Best Takeaway at the 2026 BRAVOs, beating every non-vegan takeaway in the city, which says it all. Foodilic, at 163 Western Road, is a good-value, plant-forward cafe with a full vegan breakfast and Mediterranean butter beans. Majahma placed fifth for plant-based food and seventh for value. The rest of the BRAVO 2026 Plant Champions list is worth a scroll for ideas.
Why Brighton is so good for vegans
There are a lot of vegans and vegetarians here, so restaurants simply cannot afford a single sad risotto on the menu. Even the steak and seafood places on our other lists, such as The Coal Shed with its smoked Merlot mushroom roast, put real effort into plant dishes. If you are visiting, start in the Lanes with terre à terre and Food for Friends, both a few minutes' walk from each other, then head up to North Laine for Earth and Stars. You will run out of appetite long before you run out of options.
